Edema, or swelling, is caused by water being trapped in the body’s tissues when too much salt has been absorbed. This drug can be used initially to reduce edema and then as a preventative measure.

This prescription medication is also used to treat high blood pressure. This drug is an angiotensin receptor antagonist. Hyzaar reduces blood pressure by narrowing the blood vessels.

The combination of this medication and Losartan has been effectively used in preventing strokes in people with fluctuating blood pressure. Blood pressure needs to be monitored regularly when taking these medications.

Hyzaar needs to be taken on schedule; if a dose is missed it should be taken as soon as possible. Do not double up on doses though, if it is close to time for your next dose skip the missed dose. A full glass of water should be taken with this medication. Because this is a water pill it is possible to dehydrate if you do not take enough fluids when you use this medication. This can be life threatening. Potassium supplements shouldn’t be taken with this medication either. Some salt substitutes are made of potassium; these should be avoided as well.

This medication treats the symptoms and does not cure the problem. If you are feeling better you should not stop taking Hyzaar, this can cause symptoms to return.

This medication should not be taken by people who have allergies to Sulfa medications, it has been known to give violent reactions. Diabetics, people who have Lupus or people with gout should not take this medication either. Drug allergies and history of liver or kidney disease should be discussed before starting this medication.

Side effects include slow reaction times and impaired thinking. You should know how you are going to react to this medication before driving or operating heavy machinery. Activities that require you to be mentally alert should also be avoided until you know how you will react.

As with all water pills, you will notice probably an increase in frequency of urination, although, you might have a decrease. Fluctuations in weight are also to be expected. This medication can cause weight loss as the fluid is removed from your system. Increases have also been reported.
