Are Shaggy Rugs Hard to clean?
Author: Gareth Hoyle
As you may know, I am very fond of my shaggy rugs. I have lots of them around my house, and I love the whole look and texture of them. They add interest and definition to my furnishings and fit in beautifully with the style of my home. I wouldn’t be without them, but sometimes people ask me if they are difficult to keep clean. Many of my shaggy rugs are pale in colour, and in particular I have a very beautiful white sheepskin style shaggy rug in front of my fireplace. It looks stunning there, but obviously it has to be kept pristine. There is nothing worse than a shaggy rug which looks grubby and uncared for.
Shaggy rugs have a much deeper pile than most rugs, and dirt particles can become lodged deep down and become hard to shift. The easy answer to this is to vacuum them regularly. I only vacuum mine when I clean the rest of the house, which is twice a week, and this keeps them looking good. Remember to vacuum on both sides as this prevents those pesky dirt particles from building up deep down in the pile. Neglecting to vacuum your shaggy rugs can result in an insidious build up of dirt, which though you may not notice it at first will gradually build up and result in a grey tinge to your white shaggy rugs. Other colours of shaggy rug will be affected as well though this will not be quite as noticeable as in the white shaggy rug. Even dark coloured shaggy rugs, such as black, can suffer this build up and lose their sheen. However this is true of all rugs, not just shaggy ones. It is good housekeeping practice to keep vacuuming rugs and carpets of all types.
Even the most fastidious housekeeper may find that after working hard to keep her shaggy rugs clean accidents will happen. Red wine is the worst stain I have had on my white shaggy rug. It is a sheepskin style shaggy rug and once at a dinner party a guest accidentally spilled his red wine over it. Quick action meant it was not ruined. I immediately splashed white wine over the red stain, then added salt. The next day I washed my rug in a mild solution of soap and water quick action meant my shaggy rug came up as good as new. It is still sparkling in front of my fireplace. Other stains need appropriate action, depending on the spill, but I find ordinary dirt and mud stains are generally removable from shaggy rugs with my standard mild solution of soap and water. There are specially designed carpet cleaners out there which are very good, but I still stick to my old standby of mild soap and warm water. Check that your shaggy rug is colourfast first.
I have always found that cleaning your shaggy rugs is no different from cleaning any type of carpet or rug. Although the pile is deeper, and this may mean you have to push your vacuum cleaner a little harder, they are really no more difficult to keep clean or remove stains from than any other rug. Most of my shaggy rugs are white or a pale colour, and I am proud of the way they look.
